About the Hoover Building
The Hoover Company opened this building in 1933 as its UK headquarters and manufacturing plant, employing over 3,000 people at its peak in the 1960s. The sunburst pattern above the entrance, the “Hoover Limited” lettering, and the geometric Aztec and Mayan-inspired decoration make it one of the finest Art Deco industrial buildings in Britain. During WWII, the building was camouflaged to resemble allotments while producing aircraft parts. Tesco purchased the site in 1989, placing a superstore at the rear while preserving the listed frontage. IDM Properties then converted the front building into 66 apartments: 14 maisonettes with full-height windows, 21 first-floor flats, 31 second-floor flats (many with terraces), and 12 new third-floor lofts.
